Why I love being a virtual assistant!

I get it. Being self-employed might be a new scary thing. It was for me too! You might wonder:

  • Who is going to hire me?

  • How do I market myself?

  • What about taxes!?

  • What do I charge?

  • What services should I offer?

You are not alone! All of these are totally normal and valid concerns that I also had! However, we had already moved across the country, which was new and scary, so I knew it was time to launch my business and continue creating a life I loved.

Here are some reasons I love being a VA:

  • I am the boss

  • I make my own schedule

  • My commute is one flight of stairs

  • No dress code

  • I hang out with my husband dogs all-day

  • I get to meet and work with incredible people

  • I can work from anywhere

When we moved to the Seattle area in 2019, I knew there was NO WAY I wanted to drive in the traffic here. Seriously, have you seen the traffic here!? So much worse than the “traffic” I was used to in Wisconsin!

I also hate leaving my dogs all day. Yes, I am an obsessed dog mom! A few months ago, I got a big comfy chair for my office, and I hardly get to sit in it, as Ava has claimed it for herself. If I sit in the chair (MY CHAIR!), she will scratch at me to move so she can sit in her favorite spot. Cooper is much more polite but also loves the chair. Here is what I see just about every day from my desk while I work:

Thanks to everything I’ve learned from Kim Peterson of Uniquely Savvy, I usually get dressed and ready each day. It really does help me feel better, and Kim has taught me so many things about dressing for success. However, I also love days when I get to work in pajamas too!

I usually work from home, but I've also worked from downtown Seattle, on the road during a cross country drive, in Wisconsin while visiting family....as long as I have wifi, I can work anywhere!

Seeing my clients crushing it and helping so many other people is also a huge motivator! I love that I can work with people I really align with and believe in. If something comes up, most of my work is pretty flexible and can be done in advance, so it’s easy to take care of my personal life without it having a negative impact on my work. Last week I spontaneously went shopping with a friend, and yesterday Cooper (our black lab) and I went for a random long walk at a new park we found. I work much better when I can step away from my desk and return refreshed! Being able to sleep in is also a big plus :)

I've been a VA for 2 years now, and I've learned a lot. You won't know it all when you begin, but there are people that you can connect with and learn from along the way to help you figure things out.
